413 Stuffed Friends: Shen’s Senior Project Brings Comfort to Children’s Hospital

When Stuffed Animals Mean Something More

At Plush in a Rush, we ship thousands of plush toys every week. Florists, gift shops, hospitals, and charities order them for celebrations, comfort, and sometimes for moments when someone simply needs a friend.

But every once in a while, an order reminds us why plush toys matter so much.

Recently we received a message from the Tortomasi family in Evansville, Wisconsin about their son Shen, and it’s a story we wanted to share.

Stuffed Animals as a Way to Communicate

Shen has special needs, including cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and intellectual disability. Like many people with communication challenges, Shen connects with the world in his own unique way.

For him, stuffed animals are more than toys.

They’re companions. They’re a way to express big feelings, worries, and comfort.

His family shared that plush toys help him communicate emotions that can sometimes be hard to put into words.

And that connection led Shen to choose an incredible idea for his high school senior project.

Turning Comfort Into a Mission

Shen decided he wanted to give that same comfort to other children.

For his senior project, he organized a stuffed animal drive for the Children’s Hospital where he has received care throughout his life.

With help from family, friends, and community members, Shen collected donations to purchase stuffed animals for kids who might be facing scary hospital stays.

When the drive was finished, Shen had raised enough to donate an incredible 413 stuffed friends.

The Tortomasi family used the donations to place an order through Plush in a Rush, selecting a wide variety of animals so every child could find a new companion.

A Delivery of 413 Smiles

Imagine a cart stacked high with bags of plush toys, rolling through the hospital doors.

Each one represents comfort for a nervous child, a friend during recovery, and something soft to hold when the world feels overwhelming.

For many kids in hospitals, a stuffed animal becomes the one thing they don’t have to share with nurses, doctors, or machines. It’s theirs.

And thanks to Shen’s project, hundreds of children will have that friend waiting for them.

The Message That Made Our Week

When the Tortomasi family wrote to us, they included a note that meant a lot to our team:

“Stuffed toys are a way for Shen to communicate his big feelings and worries. For his high school senior project, he did a stuffed animal drive for the Children’s Hospital where he has received all his care.

In total, our son donated 413 stuffed friends.

Thank you for your speedy shipping, high quality products, and great variety of friends we were able to order.”

We’re honored that Plush in a Rush could play a small part in Shen’s story.

Why Plush Matters

People sometimes think stuffed animals are just for little kids.

But hospitals know the truth.

A plush toy can reduce anxiety during medical procedures, provide emotional comfort, help children feel less alone, and offer something familiar in an unfamiliar environment.

That’s why children’s hospitals around the country keep stuffed animals ready for patients who need them.

Shen’s Legacy: 413 Friends and Counting

Shen’s project didn’t just complete a school requirement.

It created 413 moments of comfort for children who need it most.

From everyone at Plush in a Rush, thank you to Shen and the entire Tortomasi family for sharing this story with us—and for reminding us that something as simple as a stuffed animal can make a huge difference. And Shen… we think 413 stuffed friends is an amazing senior project. 🧸
