How to Make a Basic Homecoming Mum
Ever wanted to know how to get started in the mum-making business or hobby? We put together a tutorial to get you started. Let's start with what you need:
- Standard incurve chrysanthemum bloom
- Cardboard shield or backing
- #9, #3, & #1 ribbon matching school colors
- Accessories
- Scissors
- Hand stapler
- Hot glue gun

Preparing Shield/Backing (Part 1)
- Cut 7 six-inch strips of #9 ribbon (Color A) and 7 six-inch strips of #3 ribbon (Color B)
- Cut 6 six-inch strips of #9 ribbon (Color B) and 6 six-inch strips of #3 ribbon (Color A)
- Lay a strip of #3 ribbon along a strip of #9 ribbon of the opposite color
- Form a point by bringing the ends together and staple
- Repeat until all 13 points are made

Preparing Shield/Backing (Part 2)
- Staple points onto the cardboard shield
- Color A: form outer row (7 points), place 3 points at 12-, 9-, and 3-o'clock
- Fill remaining 4 between those
- Color B: form inner row (6 points), fill between the outer row

Preparing Streamers
- Cut 10 thirty-inch streamers of #9 ribbon (5 Color A, 5 Color B)
- Add lettering if desired
- Lay streamers in alternating color pattern and staple together
- Attach streamers to shield

Accessories
- Purchase accessories like footballs, helmets, bells, etc.
- Tie or glue to strands of #1 ribbon
- Vary ribbon lengths and staple to the backing

Braided Chains
- Cut 6' of #3 ribbon in each color
- Form L-shape by stapling ends (shiny side up for one, dull side for other)
- Loop dull over shiny, shiny through dull, and repeat
- Staple ends, hot glue a bow, attach to streamers




Making Streamers
- Cut 8 six-inch sections of #3 ribbon (4 of each color)
- Staple in a radiating pattern
- Slant-trim ends and hot glue above flower
- Repeat with four twelve-inch sections

Attaching Flower to Shield
- Hot glue entire exposed surface of shield
- Press flower onto shield and hold until dry

Making a Large Bow
- Create large bow from two #3 ribbons
- Glue beneath flower, on top of short streamers
Finishing the Backing
- Cut 3.5" section of #9 ribbon, fold in half, staple to second shield
- Glue this shield to the back of the mum
- Ensure all staples are hidden to avoid snagging garments


Completing the Mum
- Trim streamers evenly, notch ends in a V-shape
- Optionally spray with glitter for sparkle
